What is dental surgery?

Dental surgery for your pet may sound a bit intense or scary, but it is actually quite a common procedure that is vital to your pet’s health.
At-home brushing is an effective way to maintain your pet’s oral health - and should be done in addition to regular veterinarian-provided dental care. This can help prevent all these conditions, and help your furry family member enjoy a discomfort-free, healthy life!

WHAT TO EXPECT

At Sploot, our team of experts will provide a thorough evaluation of your pet’s dental health. We will clean the teeth, check for any signs of disease, and discuss any necessary treatments or preventative care with you. We offer a wide range of dental services, including digital dental radiography, scaling and polishing, extractions, and more. We use the latest techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that your pet receives the highest quality of care.

Why is it important?

Although your vet may be able to make observations and hypotheses of your pet’s dental health just with a quick check in their mouth, it is often impossible to know exactly what your pet will need until the doctor gets a good look inside. You can expect a full cleaning and tooth & gum inspection, possible periodontal diagnosis, and possible tooth extractions.
Please note that anesthesia is needed to perform a proper dental surgery! Anesthesia makes it possible to perform the dental procedures with less stress and pain for your pet. In addition, anesthesia allows for a better cleaning because your pet is not moving around and risking injury from sharp dental equipment. Plus, it is quite hard to take X-ray photos of your pet’s mouth without them moving!

What will the procedure include?

Dental surgery will include anesthesia for your pet, a full inspection of their mouth, teeth, gums, and jaw, and X-rays of their jaw bone and teeth. From here, our vets will analyze what needs to be done, and give you, the pet parent, a call to diagnose what further procedures are needed,  answer any questions or concerns, give a breakdown of the cost, and get the green light to proceed.
Please note our team will never perform any further surgical procedures without a parent’s consent. Once done, your pet will spend some time recovering from the anesthesia in the clinic, and be ready to rest at home by the end of the day.
