Working as a veterinarian in the U.S.
Sploot Veterinary Care proudly offers sponsorship for nonimmigrant (temporary) work authorization to support Canadian veterinarians relocating to the U.S. If you hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or foreign equivalent and meet the requirements for Illinois state veterinary licensure, you may be eligible for visa sponsorship under specific categories:
VISA Options
To work as a veterinarian in the U.S., you must either graduate from a veterinary school accredited by the AVMA Council on Education® (AVMA COE®) or complete an educational equivalency certification program, such as the one offered by the AVMA’s Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates® (ECFVG®).
The ECFVG certification is recognized by all state licensing boards as meeting, either fully or partially, the educational requirements for veterinary licensure. For more information about educational equivalency certifications, we recommend reaching out directly to the ECFVG for guidance.
TN Visa
If you’re a Canadian or Mexican citizen, the TN visa could be a great option for working in the U.S. This visa, created under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), allows professionals in certain fields—including veterinary medicine—to work in the U.S. The application process is fairly simple and requires a job offer from a U.S. employer along with documentation of your qualifications
H-1B Visa
The H-1B visa is a common option for professionals, including veterinarians, seeking employment in the U.S. To apply, you’ll need a confirmed job offer, and Sploot will file a petition on your behalf when the application window opens each March.
Since the H-1B visa program operates through a lottery system, only a portion of applicants are selected to receive visas. If you’re not selected, you can reapply the following year or consider other visa options.
